World Understanding and Peace: The Significance of February 23

Every year, 23rd of February serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of global peace, understanding, and mutual respect towards one another. Why Understanding Matters in Today’s World?

Due to the advent of technology and internet the world today is more connected than ever. Even though, in today's scenario creating connections is instant, no matter what corner of the world you're at, yet, somehow, misunderstandings, conflicts, and divisions seem to be on the rise. Cultural differences, different political ideologies, and economic disparities often lead to discord rather than cooperation. Understanding and empathy act as bridges, helping people from different backgrounds to coexist peacefully.

Key Pillars of Global Understanding:

1. Cultural Awareness: Appreciating different cultures of different religions fosters respect and reduces prejudice. Whether through travel, literature, or food, experiencing other cultures broadens perspectives and nurtures empathy.

2. Dialogue Over Division: Open conversations help resolve conflicts, whether between nations, communities, or individuals. Constructive discussions lead to solutions, whereas silence or hostility only deepens divides.

3. Education and Awareness: Schools and media play a crucial role in shaping how societies perceive one another. Promoting unbiased education about history, cultures, and global issues can prevent misunderstandings and stereotypes.

4. Compassion and Empathy: Understanding another person’s struggles and perspectives fosters a sense of shared humanity. Small acts of kindness—listening, helping, or simply acknowledging someone’s perspective—can make a significant difference.

How Can We Contribute to a More Understanding World?

As a responsible "Global Citizen", instead of avoiding difficult topics, discuss them with an open mind. Try to understand before reacting. Read books, watch films, or try cuisines from different parts of the world. Whether through advocacy, donations, or volunteering, contributing to peace initiatives can have a lasting impact.

While February 23 may not be officially recognized as "World Understanding and Peace Day," every day presents an opportunity to build a more compassionate and united world. By fostering respect, dialogue, and empathy, we can move closer to a future where diversity is celebrated and differences are resolved through understanding, not conflict.

What steps do you think you have taken to contribute to a more understanding world?

What is EDU-REV?

On 26th of January 2025, during the auspicious occasion of 76th Republic Day of India celebrations, Lovely Professional University (LPU) unveiled a groundbreaking initiative called "Edu Revolution" (EDU-REV). This program aims to transform the face of traditional education by empowering students to take control of their learning journeys. Dr. Ashok Kumar Mittal, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Founder Chancellor of LPU, emphasized that just as the Indian Constitution grants 18-year-olds the right to vote, LPU will now enable students to have a say in designing their own syllabus and curriculum.

Source- https://www.facebook.com/LPUCivilEngineering/

The Edu Revolution initiative shifts the educational paradigm from passive to active learning. Students are given the autonomy to decide what, how, and when they learn, as well as how they are evaluated. This personalized approach is further enhanced by artificial intelligence, which tailors learning experiences, creates dynamic tools, and boosts engagement and efficiency. While acknowledging potential challenges, Dr. Mittal expressed confidence in the collaborative efforts of students and faculty to develop an innovative educational model.

Through Edu Revolution, various departments at LPU have launched specialized programs. For eg: The School of Civil Engineering introduced the EDU Revolution Program, integrating cutting-edge technology, hands-on projects, and industry-aligned curricula to prepare future civil engineers.  Similarly, the School of Computer Application and School of Agriculture announced the Edu-Revolution Competition, held from February 5th to February 12th, 2025, providing students with opportunities to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios.

Through the EDU-REV initiative, students can reap multiple benefits such as Waivered Attendance, Class Assignment (CA) Relaxation, choosing what subjects should be implemented in their curriculum and so much more.

Also, LPU's commitment to honoring national heroes is very evident through the "Rakshak Samman Anudhan" Scholarship, dedicated to our Armed Forces personnel and the families that depend on them. This scholarship reflects the university's respect for those who serve our nation.

ISRO 100: From Aryabhata to Chandrayaan and Beyond

Reeling back to our childhood, all of us could only wonder what could be beyond those shiny little stars and moon that we see up in the sky right? Who knew this same inquisitiveness that once resided in all of us, will become a passion for a small kid from Ahmedabad, who will later be known as the "Father of the Indian Space Program" : Dr Vikram Sarabhai. This spark of passion later on August 15 1969 ignited a flame called the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

Source: Wikipedia

India's space journey is a remarkable tale of perseverance, innovation, and scientific excellence. From launching its first satellite Aryabhata in 1975 to the historic success of Chandrayaan and much more, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has carved a stand for itself in the global space community.

The Beginning: Aryabhata (1975)

India’s space dream took flight on April 19, 1975, with the launch of Aryabhata, the country’s first satellite. Named after the ancient Indian mathematician and astronomer, Aryabhata was built to conduct scientific experiments in X-ray astronomy, solar physics, and aeronomy. Though it functioned for just a few days due to a power failure, it marked India's entry into the Age of Space.

The Magnification: SLV, PSLV, and GSLV

After Aryabhata, India focused on developing its own launch capabilities:

SLV (Satellite Launch Vehicle): In 1979, India launched "Rohini Satellite" using SLV-3, making it one of the few nations with indigenous launch capability.

The Pulwama attack: a tragic event that shook the nation’s conscience and became one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in India's history. What Happened on February 14, 2019?

On this ill-fated day, a suicide bomber from the Pakistan-based terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) rammed a vehicle filled with explosives into a convoy of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force) personnel in Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of 40 brave soldiers, leaving the nation in shock and grief. The incident not only intensified India’s counterterrorism efforts but also highlighted the threats posed by cross-border terrorism.

The Aftermath: India's Response

Following the Pulwama attack, India took some decisive actions; to retaliate, the Indian Air Force conducted air strikes on terrorist camps in Balakot, Pakistan, on February 26, 2019. This was a significant move in India's counter-terrorism strategy. India also worked on international platforms to expose Pakistan’s involvement in harboring terrorist groups, leading to global condemnation. This incident prompted a review of security protocols, leading to improved strategies to prevent future attacks on armed forces.

February 14 is not just another date on the calendar—it is a day of remembrance, resilience, and national pride. While the loss of our brave soldiers in Pulwama was heartbreaking, their sacrifice has not been in vain , but has strengthened India's resolve to combat terrorism. By observing this day as Black Day, we ensure that their legacy lives on and that their courage continues to inspire every Indian.

People like us sleep sound in our houses, because there are Bravehearts out there who are protecting our borders day and night. Our duty as responsible citizens of India is to never forget the sacrifices made for our safety and honor the heroes who laid down their lives for the nation. Jai Hind!

A New Pandemic? - The Terror of the Guillain-Barre Syndrome!

Are we heading towards a new pandemic? Will there be a new lockdown?- Are some questions that arise in minds as we see The Guillain-Barre Syndrome make its way through the country. Historically speaking, India has experienced GBS outbreaks before. One case that gained attention was in the Northern region,  2019- A child died due to the severity of the symptoms that presented caused by GBS.

Now the question arises, what exactly is The Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS)?

The Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) is a rare neurological disorder where one's own immune system attacks the peripheral nerves of the nervous system. The initial symptoms that occur due to GBS are  numbness, tingling, and muscle weakness, which can escalate to paralysis. It often begins tingling and weakness starting in the feet and legs and spreading up to the upper body and arms.

Source- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUEunZYZgII

While the exact cause remains uncertain, many cases are preceded by infections, particularly with the bacterium "Campylobacter jejuni", commonly found in undercooked poultry and contaminated water. The link between the two was discovered in the 1900s in the rural China, where the pathogen was common in chickens and GBS occurred every monsoon because the kids played in the puddles of the water which was contaminated of duck and chicken droppings.

Source- https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c2038ggnpx7o

What is the current scenario?

As of early February 2025, at least five individuals have succumbed to suspected GBS in Maharashtra, with the majority of cases reported in Pune. Out of 163 reported cases, 21 patients are on ventilator support, and 48 have been admitted to intensive care units. In response to the outbreak, the Pune Municipal Corporation, with assistance from the World Health Organization (WHO), has initiated public health interventions emphasizing food and hand hygiene, as well as the consumption of safe water. Authorities have examined over 60,000 households, collected 160 water samples for testing, and advised residents to drink boiled water and consume properly cooked food.

The current situation underscores the importance of public health measures, including maintaining proper hygiene, ensuring food safety, and seeking immediate medical attention if symptoms arise. While GBS remains a rare condition, its potential severity necessitates prompt recognition and treatment to improve outcomes.
